Death rap for top Jamaat leader in Bangladesh

Bangaldesh's supreme court Tuesday sentenced Abdul Quader Mollah, a senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader, to death for wartime offences.

The court found the original life term too lenient for killing one Hazrat Ali Laskar and his family during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and revised it to the maximum death sentence, The Daily Star reported.

In February, Mollah, assistant secretary of the Jamaat-e-Islami, was given life imprisonment by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal.

The verdict came months after a youth uprising in the country that continued for several weeks.

Mollah's counsels said they would seek its review, according to the newspaper.
