Denmark captain and former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger on Thursday announced his retirement from football due to health problems suffered in recent seasons.

In a press conference, the 31-year-old said the last few years were difficult, reports Efe.

Agger joined Liverpool for eight seasons before returning to Brondby to end his career.

The player admitted he received offers from several clubs, including Fenerbahce, according to Danish media.

He revealed that Morten Olsen, former coach of Denmark, and Norwegian Age Hareide, current coach of the Danish national team, asked him not to retire.

Despite back problems he has suffered for years, Agger played 75 games with his national team and scored 12 goals, in addition to participating in the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
