Edward Herrmann dies at 71

Actor Edward Herrmann, who was best known for his patriarch role in "The Gilmore Girls" drama series, has died at the age of 71.

According to his family, Herrmann died Wednesday morning in a New York hospital after fighting brain cancer. He was in intensive care for the past three-and-a-half weeks, reports tmz.com.

He was married twice and is survived by three children.
