Horse-drawn carriages face elimination in Myanmar city

Horse-drawn carriages, which have been used as a low-cost means of transportation over the past century in Myanmar's second largest city of Mandalay, were facing elimination, local media reported on Sunday.

Until now, people from Moekaung Market, Seinpan Ward and Ayartun Ward used these carts along with visitors from nearby Sagaing region's Shwebo, Monywa, Chaung U, Ye U and Tentse towns travelling to the western wards in Mandalay, drivers from the horse-drawn carriage station said.

Over the past two decades, Mandalay residents have started using bicycles, motorbikes, trishaws instead of the horse-drawn carriages, reports Xinhua news agency.

However, the Inwa region, which foreigners mostly visit, still has hundreds of such horse-drawn carriages, the drivers added.
