National grasscourt championship: Unseeded Pedi Reddy tames top seed Rana

Unseeded Vaishnavi Peddi Reddy of Andhra Pradesh stunned top ranked Delhi girl Shweta C. Rana of Delhi in straight sets to march into the women's singles quarter-finals of the National Grass Court Tennis Championship here Wednesday.

After a 95-minute contest, Peddi Reddy carved out an emphatic 6-3 6-2 win over the India No.4 to earn the applause of the spectators at the Calcutta South Club.

Peddi Reddy pocketed the first set by breaking Rana early at 1-1 and then again at 5-3.

In the next set, Peddi Reddy looked even stronger as she opened up a quick 3-0 lead by breaking her rival in the second game. Again at 5-2, Rana was broken, without even a single point coming her way.

 

The other seeded women players on show during the day made it to the last eight.

Second seeded Goa girl Natasha Palha (GOA) crushed Shalaka Uddur Manjunath of Karnataka 6-0, 6-0, while third seed Andhra Pradesh's Nidhi Chilumula did short work of statemate Rama Neharika 6-1, 6-1.

Fourth seed Sharmada Balu of Karnataka accounted for unheralded local girl Amrita Mukherjee 6-3, 6-1, and Andhra's Bhuvana Kalva - seeded a rung lower than Balu - stormed past Namita Bal of Maharashtra 6-0, 6-0.

Nithyaraj Baburaj (TN)(8) bt Sneha Padamata (AP) 6-3, 3-6, 7-5

The only last 16 tie in the women's section that went into three sets saw eighth seed Nithyaraj Baburaj of Tamil Nadu pip Sneha Padamata of Andhra 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

In men's pre-quarter battles, unseeded Bengal boy Rupesh Roy showed the door to local challenger and seventh seed Saurav Sukul 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5), and top seed Tamil Nadu's Vijay Sundar Prashant coasted to an easy 6-3, 6-3 triumph over T. Elwin Anthony from the same state.

Third seed Vishnu Vardhan of Tamil Nadu did not have to break much sweat to romp to a 6-1 6-2 victory over Tejas Chaukulkar of Maharashtra.

Second seed Tamil Nadu competitor Jayaprakash Mohit Mayur sped past his rival from the same state, Sasikumar Mukund 6-3, 6-3

Andhra's Ashwin Vijayragavan continued his good show with a clinical 6-1 6-2 decimation of Andhra's Shaikh Abdullah.Match Scores (West Bengal, if not specified);
