The Nigerian government has set a three-month deadline for ending the Boko Haram insurgency that has claimed more than 10,000 lives and displaced millions in the west African nation.

President Muhammadu Buhari ordered that Boko Haram militants, active in Nigeria, should be defeated within three months, reported Xinhua.

Newly-appointed National Security Adviser Major General Babagana Munguno (retd) visited the forces undertaking security operations and gave them orders to wipe out the militants.

He said the government was committed to providing all necessary logistics for the troops engaged in the anti-terrorist operations.

Buhari also met leaders of neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon to discuss the ongoing joint offensive against the Boko Haram militants.
