A man was killed when unidentified assailants fired upon a group of labourers in Assam's Jorhat district Monday morning, an official said.

The incident occurred at around 9.30 a.m. at Naginijan area on the Assam-Nagaland border. The deceased, a labourer, has been identified as Sanjay Bhumij.

Additional security forces were deployed in the area after the killing.

"Some labourers had gone to the area to work in the paddy fields. A group of five armed men, who looked like Naga militants, fired indiscriminately on the labourers," said Jorhat Deputy Commissioner R.C. Jain.

"The assailants fled towards Nagaland and disappeared," Jain said.

Vikram Khalate, superintendent of police of Mokokchung district of Nagaland, which borders Jorhat in Assam, said an operation had been launched in the border areas where the incident took place.

He ruled out the involvement of Naga militants in the incident and said the culprits would be arrested soon.
