Pakistan earthquake death toll 355 (Roundup)

The death toll in the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Pakistan's Balochistan province Tuesday afternoon has reached 355, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said Thursday .

The NDMA also confirmed that 619 people sustained injuries, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.

Although the tremors of the earthquake were felt across Balochistan province, the worst affected districts are Awaran and Kech, which is why the highest number of casualties have occurred in these two districts.

According to a press release issued by the NDMA, 311 people died and 440 got injured in Awaran and 44 died and 179 sustained injuries in Kech.

 

The NDMA has supplied 2,000 tents, 1,500 energy biscuits, 5,000 blankets and 16 tons of water bottles to the the affected people.

The army and the Frontier Corps have provided 200 tents, 1,212 food packs, 300 mosquito nets and 3,900 water bottles.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Balochistan has till now provided 2,600 tents, 1,700 food packs, 300 blankets, mosquito nets and jerry cans each.

PDMA Punjab has given 5,000 tents, 500 food packs, 500 flour bags (each weighing 10 kg) and 400 miscellaneous food items.

A press release issued Thursday morning by the PDMA Balochistan said 95 percent of the houses in worst-affected Awaran were destroyed or damaged in the quake, reported Xinhua.

The Tuesday afternoon earthquake mainly affected six districts in the southern part of Balochistan with the epicentre most close to Awaran, a district located at 27.09 degrees north latitude and 65. 61 degrees east longitude.

Rescue and relief operations involving army, paramilitary forces and civilians are under way in full swing in the affected areas, said local officials.
