When ONGC Chairman and Managing Director D K Sarraf met journalists at an informal gathering in Mumbai last week, he was prepared to avoid questions on its case with Reliance Industries in which the company has accused Reliance Industries of an alleged gas "theft" worth Rs 30,000 crore from its block in the Krishna Godavari Basin adjacent to RIL's KG-D6 block.

But the technique he chose was a strange one. In answer to most questions on the issue, Sarraf attributed his knowledge of the matter to the media and said: "As per the media reports we have learnt that...."
