After Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed in a recent interview that the current government was better than the United Progressive Alliance-led ‘suitcase ki sarkaar’, hinting at its list of scams, the Congress hit back with General Secretary Shakeel Ahmed calling the Modi government “both a ‘suit-boot’ and ‘a suitcase ki sarkaar’.
“He wears suit-boot and people like (Gautam) Adani carry his sarkaar in their suitcases,” said Shakeel. Earlier, the prime minister was commenting on the ‘suit boot ki sarkaar’ controversy in an interview marking his government’s one year in the office.
Congress party leaders have recently taken to naming industrialist Adani, who is allegedly close to the prime minister, as the foremost in Modi’s “select group of crony capitalists.”
Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh also took a jibe at the industrialist, saying, "Modi carries a "tijori" (coffer) during his foreign visits. Big industrialists accompany him wherever he goes. These industrialists are his coffers."
Adani has accompanied the prime minister on several foreign visits including the controversial tour to Australia, when Adani bagged a loan worth Rs 6,200-crore, from the State Bank of India, and also went on to ink a coal-project agreement in the island nation.
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s jibe at the Modi government as being a “suit boot ki sarkaar” for its allegedly pro-corporate and anti-people, anti-farmer policies, had nettled the government as it prepared to celebrate its achievements of one year in office.
