Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has asked his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee to lift curbs on the sale of potatoes to his state and help reduce the exorbitant price of the vegetable. Soren, in a letter to Banerjee, said yesterday restrictions by the West Bengal government on potato sales had caused prices of the vegetable to rise in Jharkhand.
"For the past few days, it has become a matter for concern over rise on potatoes following a ban by West Bengal, from where Jharkhand gets 50 per cent of its requirement," Soren said in his letter, according to an official release here.
Soren said Banerjee should consider lifting the ban because the vegetable is the staple diet of the poor.
