12-day Chithirai festival begins at famous Meenakshi temple

The annual Chithirai festival of famous Sri Meenakshi temple here began with the formal flag hoisting ceremony at the temple premises today.

The presiding deities of Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi were brought in silver thrones to the flag staff where special poojas were performed before the ceremony.

The celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar would take place on May 10, followed by car festival on the next day.

During the twelve-day festival, the deities of Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess meenakshi would be taken in different Vahanas in a long procession.
