The celebrations would be inaugurated by Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan at the Members' Lounge of the state assembly on August 23 in the presence of Speaker G Karthikeyan, Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan and leaders of political parties, an official release said.
The first form of today's Kerala Assembly was the Travancore Legislative Council which met for the first time on August 23, 1888. The Council had eight members and the first meeting was presided over by Divan Sankara Subbayya.
The year-long programme would include lectures, seminars, exhibitions and cultural programmes. President Pranab Mukherjee, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Union Ministers and cultural personalities would attend the several functions to be held during the year, the release said.
The first Kerala assembly came into being in 1957, a year after the formation of the state on November 1, 1956. The present assembly is the 13th one in the state.
