At least two persons were killed and another one injured when two unidentified gunmen targeted a car of a top leader of Pakistan's minority Shia community here tonight, police said.

Mirza Yousuf, a central leader Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen, escaped the apparent sectarian attack in the city's Gulistan-e-Jauhar area. One of his bodyguards and a policeman were killed while one of his aides sustained injuries, they said.

Motorcycle-borne attackers fled away from the site.

"It is apparently a sectarian attack but Mirza Yousuf escaped unhurt since he was not riding in the car on which the two gunmen opened fire," a police official said.

Sectarian violence has increased in the metropolis this year with a number of leading Shia and Sunni scholars or leaders killed in daring targeted attacks.
