About two lakh government employees in Uttarakhand today went on an indefinite strike over their various demands including anomaly in pay and promotions, affecting functioning of various departments.

The strike would go on until "our demands were met and an order was issued in this regard," State Employees Joint Council president Thakur Prahlad Singh said, adding that the government's insensitive stance toward its employees had forced them to go on the strike.

Singh said for now employees in the emergency services have not joined the strike. But if a positive decision was not taken in two days, employees of transport, water and health departments will paralyse the government by joining the strike, he said.

Official sources said the government functions were affected because of the strike and a solution would be found soon.
