4 undertrials complaint of manhandling by jail staff in Goa

Four undertrials at Goa's new 'correctional centre' at Colvale in North Goa district have complained to a trial judge that they were physically assaulted by the jail staff while they produced for remand.

Inspector General (Prisons) has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The undertrials who were part of a batch seven accused, including an Israeli and a Portuguese national, who were produced before a judge of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) court at Mapusa yesterday where they even showed scar marks.

The four were sent to the state run Goa Medical College and Hospital where medical reports confirmed that some of them had suffered fractures as well as bruises and other injuries.
 

"The government has been informed about the incident and an inquiry has been instituted. If at all such incidents have taken place, it is very unfortunate," Elvis Gomes, Inspector General of Prisons has said.

The NDPS court too has taken cognizance of the issue and has reported the matter to Goa Human Rights Commission as well as the North Goa district court.
