50 tortoises seized

One person has been arrested here after he was found to be in illegal possession of 50 tortoises belonging to endangered species, police said today.

Sleuths of CID Forest Cell arrested Lawrence Xavier during a raid at a bus-stop yesterday, a press note by the CID Forest cell said.

Illegal possession of any endangered species is an offence under the Wildlife Protection Act.

These tortoises were transported from Chennai.

Probe is on to trace other accused in the case.
