57-year old Kumki elephant dies

A 57-year-old kumki (tamed) elephant died today following infection and lack of proper intake of food and water, Forest Department officials said.

Nanjan was brought from Chadivayal for the recently concluded rejuvenation camp at Nellithurai on the banks of River Bhavani near Mettupalayam.

As the animal was suffering from musth, officials did not send it back. Food and water were given to the chained elephant from a distance of nearly 20 feet for fear of attack till a week ago, they said.

As the animal got infected due to cut and wounds from its chain around its leg, it was undergoing treatment, officials said.
 

During the last five days the elephant was not taking food or water, they said.
