A 17-year-old student today committed suicide due to alleged sexual harassment by her teacher in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district, police said.

The girl, a student of intermediate second year in A P Social Welfare Residential Junior College at Khambampadu village, was fed up with the lewd messages sent by her lecturer Chandrasekhar, DSP A Shankar Reddy said.

Unable to put up with the indecent messages, the victim ended her life by consuming pesticide, he said.

Soon after the incident, irate villagers allegedly thrashed the teacher and handed him over to Konduru Mandal Police, which registered a case and arrested him.

Meanwhile, students from the college demanded that the accused be booked under provisions of Nirbhaya Act.
