The office of Brazil's president says the sports minister is leaving.

President Dilma Rousseff's office says George Hilton asked to leave the position, which is in the spotlight as Rio de Janeiro prepares to host the August 5-21 Olympics.

The announcement late yesterday caps weeks of speculation about Hilton's fate.

Hilton first kept his job this month by quitting his party when it pulled out of Rousseff's fragile governing coalition.

And a top Rousseff aide said last week that Hilton was resigning though his ministry declined to confirm it at the time.

The announcement also comes amid uncertainty over six other Cabinet ministers whose party pulled out of the governing coalition on Tuesday. The party said its members would quit the Cabinet, but some say they'll stay.
