Congress President Sonia Gandhi and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi today condoled the passing away of distinguished public servant and diplomat Naresh Chandra.

In his long and exceptional career, Chandra served the country with formidable resolve and astuteness, Sonia said in a statement.

"His contribution to governance, policy and public issues have left a lasting imprint on our civil services and nation," she said.

Chandra, a former Indian Ambassador to the US, died at a private hospital near Panaji in Goa last night due to multiple organ failure. He was 82.

"A civil servant who represented the best traditions of our steel frame, Ambassador Naresh Chandra's passing leaves behind a void. My condolences," Rahul said on Twitter.
