Assam government has set up a one-man commission of Justice (Retd) P C Phukan to inquire into the violence during the February 12 panchayat polls that claimed 21 lives in Goalpara district.
An official release here said today the commission, which was notified yesterday, will ascertain the root causes leading to the violence in various places of Goalpara district, identify individuals or organisations responsible for it and also fix responsibility.
It will also determine lapses on the part of civil and police administration in tackling the situation.

The commission will give recommendations for ensuring prevention of recurrence of such incidents, besides, inquiring into any other relevant matter.
It will submit its report within six months from the date of issue of the notification on February 26, the release added.
Violence in Goalpara during the recently concluded panchayat polls led to the death of 21 people and injury to several others including security personnel, besides causing considerable loss of property.
