A police constable was suspended today following his arrest for allegedly assisting red-sander smugglers by piloting their routes in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

Constable P Chennaiah, attached to Maripadu police station, was accused of aiding smugglers on at least 10-12 occasions over the past one year after taking money, Atmakur Circle Inspector Altaf Hussain, told PTI over phone.

"The constable allegedly used to clear the routes of the red-sanders smugglers during transportation of illegally cut red-sander wood," the CI said.

Arrest and subsequent interrogation of a red-sander smuggler revealed the involvement of the constable, who after verification was suspended and arrested on charge of abetting the smugglers, police said, adding that probe into the matter is on.
