Observing that ordinary people are hurt disproportionately by corruption, Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan today cautioned that corruption could lead to a situation of social unrest and chaos unless tacked urgently.
"It is seen that corruption has permeated various walks of life bearing different names and forms. While each one of us is affected by corruption, it is the ordinary people who are disproportionately hurt by corruption.
"Corruption is a menace, and unless tackled urgently, it could lead to a situation of social unrest and chaos," the Governor said, in a message addressed to state government officers and employees, on the occasion of the Vigilance Awareness Week being observed from October 28 to November 2.
He, however, expressed confidence in the ability of individuals in detecting and ending corruption.
"While institutions of governance can contribute to the process of ending corruption, individuals can play an even more effective role in detecting and exposing corruption," the Governor said. In this connection, Sankaranarayanan called for making public institutions transparent, people-friendly and corruption-free.
The Governor read out the message and gave the pledge of integrity and transparency to the staff and officers of Raj Bhavan, police personnel and PWD officials posted at Raj Bhavan.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, in his message, reiterated the resolve of his government to make maximum use of Information Technology to bring transparency in government work. He sought the participation of people in the efforts of government in ending corruption.
The theme of this year's Vigilance Awareness Week is "Promoting Good Governance - Positive Contribution of Vigilance".
