commissioner A B Ibrahim has convened a meeting of people's representatives, social activists and political leaders on January 8 to discuss a proposal to turn DK into a bandh-free district.

The meeting, to be presided over by the district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai, welcomed suggestions from organisations and individuals on the matter, an official release here said today.

Invitations had already been sent to people's representatives and 70 organisations in the district to attend the meeting.

Dakshina Kannada district had become infamous over the years for its 'bandh culture', and some organisations had been calling for bandh citing trivial reasons. This had become a major impediment for the growth of the district and a major inconvenience to the common man, Ibrahim said in the release.
