The opposition AIADMK has expressed serious concern over the demolition of the 'koradus' (pavements) in the heart of the city in the name of beautification as such 'ill-conceived steps' would only deprive Puducherry of its ancient heritage.
Addressing reporters here today, AIADMK leader Kannan said though he was happy with the initiatives of the current government to make Puducherry beautiful and clean, especially the 'Operation garbage' drive initiated by Lt Governor Kiran Bedi, he, however, raised suspicion over the intention of people wanting to ruin her good work by engaging themselves in demolition of pavements, causing hardship to the poor street vendors.
Stressing the need to regulate the shopping centres in the city, he said this can be done by asking the street vendors to arrange their wares in a manner that does not cause inconvenience to the pedestrians.
Removing the 'koradus' (pavements) a special feature of Puducherry for centuries 'is a step in the wrong direction and people would be only too glad to urge the authorities to give up demolition'.
