The Allahabad High Court today asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file an affidavit disclosing the nature of criminal cases in which the Chairman of the state's Public Service Commission Anil Kumar Yadav was said to be named.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Yashwant Verma gave the direction on a Public Interest Litigation filed by an advocate, Satish Kumar Singh, who has challenged the appointment of Yadav to the post on a number of grounds.

Appearing on behalf of the state government, Advocate General Vijay Bahadur Singh told the court that the cases against Yadav were "of petty nature".

However, the court pointed out that as per an affidavit filed by Yadav himself, the UPPSC Chairman was also said to be involved in a case lodged under Section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) which was decided in his favour because of witnesses turning hostile.

The court fixed September 1 as the next date of hearing in the matter.
