A full grown elephant was poisoned to death allegedly by poachers and one of its tusks stolen in Jharkhand's Latehar district, forest officials said here today.

The elephant was poisoned at Garu Baresand range compartment 7 of Palamau Tiger Project in the district, the Director of the Project, Dr. S K S E H Kazmi, said.

The poachers have split open the jaw of the elephant and taken away one of the tusks, sources said adding that the other tusk, weighing 10 kg left untouched, was recovered by the officials.

The carcass of the elephant was recovered from the jungle and buried following a post-mortem on Wednesday.
