The Fisheries Research Centre of Assam Agriculture University (AAU) here has earned the distinction of being the first in the country to set up a poly house for fish farming to advance breeding periods.

The new system can control temperature and keep the water warm to advance the reproductive maturity of fishes and will lead to enhanced production in the fishery sector, the Centre's chief scientist Dr Bibha Chetia Bora said.

"Our region has huge water bodies, but due to environment conditions fish production was low. Now situation will change with adoption of the poly house system," she said.

"In order to advance the breeding process through increasing temperature, poly houses covered with ultraviolet stabilised low density polyethylene film has to be installed over the tank or pond to keep the temperature warm during winter," she said.
