Five persons and a captive trained elephant were today injured by two bisons who strayed into human habitation at Chapani in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal from nearby Buxa forest range.

Forest department sources said people ran helter-skelter on seeing the two bisons and the animals injured five of them.

A captive trained elephant was brought to push the two animals back to the forest but the bisons attacked the tusker and injured it.

Deputy Field Director of Buxa range Apurbo Sen said one bison was given a tranquiliser shot and pushed back into the forest.

Efforts are on to push back the other, he said, adding it is being hoped it will return to the forest on its own after it gets dark.
