A townscape by Francis Newton Souza and a portrait by Antonio Xavier Trindade were among the top lots in the recent Bonhams Modern Contemporary South Asian Art sale in London, which fetched a total of 4,03,000 pounds.

The auction conducted on May 27 featured famous artists from the contemporary and modern period in India, including S H Raza, M F Husain, and those from the Bengal school like Sudhir Khastgir and Ramkinkar Baij.

While Souza's townscape fetched 37,500 pounds, Trindade's untitled (Portrait of an Old Man) went under the hammer for 33,750 pounds, auctioneers said in a statement.

"We were particularly delighted that a beautiful townscape by Francis Newton Souza and portrait by Antonio Xavier Trindade achieved such stellar results. These two works show how diverse Indian art is, and how varied the tastes of our collectors are," Tahmina Ghaffar, Head of Sale for Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, said.

Another notable lot in the auction was a work by Pakistani artist Anwar Jalal Shemza, which made 28,750 pounds against an estimate of 3,000 pounds to 5,000 pounds, a result just short of the world record price.

Sakti Burman's Untitled (The Soul Must Have Choices) went for 28,750 pounds while Tyeb Mehta's Untitled (Head) was sold for 20,000 pounds.

Works by Ismail Gulgee, Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar, Krishen Khanna, Ustad Allah Bux and Jamil Naqsh are among top 10 lots sold in the auction.
