Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi today congratulated five-time world champion boxer M C Mary Kom for clinching the gold medal in the ongoing 17th Asian Games at Incheon, South Korea.

In a statement here, Gogoi said the "superlative performance" put up by the Olympic bronze winner at the Asian Games has not only made the north east region proud and elated but also the entire country.

"I convey my heartiest congratulations to her on winning the gold medal at the Asian Games. Her gold clinching performance has assumed more importance because she has become the first ever Indian woman boxer to have won a gold medal at the Asian Games."

"I hope she will continue to keep the flag of our country on a constant high with her performances in the upcoming events," he added.

Kom, 31, defeated Kazakhstan's Zhaina Shekerbekova in the flyweight (51KG) summit clash at Incheon to become the first Indian woman boxer to clinch a gold medal at the Asian Games.
