Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has been designated as the Brand Ambassador for an anti-tobacco campaign being organised here by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Assam government.
The two-day event, 'Campaign for Tobacco Free North East', would be held in Guwahati from February 27, an official statement said.
"Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has been designated as the Brand Ambassador of this event which will involve the Chief Ministers and Health Ministers of all the North Eastern states," it said.
The campaign aims to increase awareness about the menaces of tobacco consumption and its health impacts, it said.

The statement added that Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad has sent a letter to Gogoi congratulating him on being selected as the Brand Ambassador for the campaign.
"The Union Minister assured of all possible cooperation to make this event a grand success. In his letter, Azad also expressed his hope that this venture would add substantial value to the tobacco control efforts in the country, particularly in the North East and will also help in saving lives and reduce public health costs," it said.
