Seven gold nuggets with Brahmi inscriptions and 21 gold covered rudraksha seeds dating back to third century BC have been unearthed at Thenur in the district, officials said today.
According to Madurai Government Museum Officials and Archaeological experts, the gold nuggets were 99.9 per cent pure and it could belong to third BC or 4th BC.
A gold dollar also had been found.
The Brahmi inscriptions mentioned that the nuggets belonged to one Kotha of Bogul Kunram (Perunkunram). All the articles were found buried in clay pot.
