Foreign currency and unclaimed gold bars totally valued over Rs 40 lakh were seized at the Chennai airport over the past two days, customs officials said Monday.
Colombo-bound Sayathu Muhamathu was caught carrying 86,500 Saudi Riyals, equivalent to Rs 15.52 lakh, in his innerwear Monday, a customs release said.
In another case, Ajebkhan of Madurai was found carrying 13,600 euros equivalent to Rs 10.48 lakh concealed in the hollow handle of his stroller bag on Sunday.
Officials said four unclaimed gold bars worth Rs 15.12 lakh were seized from an Air India flight here Monday.
"Air Intelligence Unit officers rummaged an Air India flight which arrived from Sharjah and found four unclaimed gold bars weighing 465 grams of 24 K purity," the release said.
The gold bars were concealed inside a life jacket placed under one of the passenger seats.
