The golden chariot procession was today taken out around the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara near here, amid chanting of Vedic hymns by priests on the penultimate day of the Navaratri Brahmotsavam festivities.

Temple officials said over a lakh of devotees took part in the chariot procession.

The ancient Idols of Lord Venkateswara and his divine consorts Sri Lakshmi and Sri Padmavathi, adorned with several gem set ornaments, were mounted on the traditionally decorated chariot.

Devotees pulled the 32-foot high chariot with the help of huge twin ropes tied to it.

The nine-day Brahmotsavam festival began on October 14.
