HC orders medical examination of person to ascertain gender

The Kerala High Court today ordered medical examination of a 25-year-old person, who claimed to be a

transgender, on a plea by his mother, alleging that her son was being illegally detained by members of the community.

The order was issued by the Division bench comprising Justices V Chitambaresh and K P Jyothindranath on a Habeas Corpus Petition filed by his mother, alleging that her son was illegally detained by the transgender community.

The man, produced before the Court today, claimed to be a transgender and wanted to live with other members of the transgender community.

The court then directed a team of doctors at a hospital here to examine whether the person was a transgender or not by a medical/psychological examination.
