The Kerala High Court today directed police to maintain a constant vigil on a resort at Kumarakom near Kottayam which was vandalised by a group of DYFI and CITU activists for alleged encroachment of government land.
A division bench comprising justices K Vinod Chandran and Ashok Menon gave the directive while allowing a petition by the Niraamaya Retreats Kumarakom Private Limited seeking protection in view of the attack on it in November last year.
Coming in a procession, the activists of the youth and trade wings of the ruling CPI-M had allegedly committed large scale destruction in the resort, a hospitality venture of private equity firm Jupiter Capital founded by Rajya Sabha MP and NDA vice-chairman in Kerala Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
"...we are of the opinion that since there has been continuous threat against the petitioner's establishment, it is for the Kottayam district police to ensure that no further act of vandalism is committed," the court said.
"The police shall have a constant vigil over the properties and shall also act expeditiously if any act of vandalism is apprehended or committed," it added.
