Tamil Nadu government was planning to set up soon a fisheries industrial estate in this coastal town, state Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said today.
The estate, first of its kind in the state, had been proposed to promote small industries related to fisheries and allied disciplines, he said.
He was inaugurating the permanent campus for College of Fisheries Engineering (CoFE) at Panangudi in the district this evening.

Jayakumar said the college was conceptualised by late Chief Minister J Jayalalitha during 2012.
"The permanent campus has been equipped with buildings worth Rs 8.5 crore. The new buildings inaugurated today include hostels for men and women students, classrooms, laboratories and administrative buildings," he said.
A college of fisheries science had been proposed to be set up at Vedaranyam near here at a cost of Rs 22 crore, he added.
