Kerala receives copious rains

Though the South West Monsoon has been weak over Kerala, rains occurred at most places in the state and Lakshadweep today, weather officials said.

Several houses and an All India Radio tower were damaged in the heavy rains in Thiruvananthapuram, district authorities said.

While Vaikom received 9 cm rainfall, Kanjirappally, in Kottayam district, received 8 cm rainfall today, according to an IMD bulletin.

Kudlu received 6 cm, Alapuzha 5 cm, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Munnar and Thiruvananthapuram city recorded 3 cm rainfall, it added.

It said rain and thunder showers are most likely to occur at most places in Kerala and Lakshadweep in the next five days.
 

Meanwhile, a 122-metre long 20 KW medium wave transmitter tower of the AIR, Thiruvananthapuram, collapsed due to heavy rains and wind yesterday.

A new tower would be erected and efforts are on to immediately start the MW transmission, R C Gopal, Station Director, said.
