Labourer succumbs to injuries at maize processing plant

A labourer died after his right hand was chopped off while working in a maize processing plant in Nabarangpur district of Odisha, officials said today.

Jugadev Gond of Marapara village, who had also injured his left hand in the process late on Friday, died at the district headquarters hospital yesterday, they said.

The Nabarangpur district administration has formed a three-member team to inquire into the incident that took place in Chudeipara village and provided Rs 7,000 to the deceased's family for his final rites, Nabarangpur Collector Mohammed Siddiquie Alam said.

"The team including the concerned block development officer and the district labour officer will inquire into the circumstances that led to the incident. Whether the processing unit was a registered one will also be probed. Action will be taken once we get the report," he said.
 

In Novermber 2014, a 12 year-old class V student had lost his left hand while wokring in a maize processing unit at Kosagumuda, sources said.
