Writer-actor Lena Waithe is set to produce comedy "A 40-Year-Old Version", to be directed by Radha Blank.

Blank has also penned the script, which revolves around a black New York playwright who decides to reinvent herself and salvage her art by becoming a rapper at the age of 40.

According to Variety, the film will also feature Peter Kim and hip-hop performer Oswin Benjamin, who is making his feature film acting debut.

Praising Blank as a rare talent, Emmy-winning writer Waithe said, "She's unlike anyone I've ever met - and I wanted to do everything in my power to help get this movie made."

The project will also be produced by Inuka Bacote, Jennifer Semler and Jordan Fudge.

Blank, who has served as a writer on "Empire" and "She's Got to Have It" which she also produced, said the movie is a love letter to her hometown, New York.

"As a native New Yorker raised on cinema, I've been waiting my entire life to see someone who looks like me in the centre of a classic New York film.

"And now thanks to the amazing support of Jordan, Lena and the rest of the talented team of producers, I get to make my dream come true," she said.

Rishi Rajani and Trevite Willis will serve as executive producers.

Production is underway in New York City.
