An insurance company officer was arrested in Ahmedabad today for allegedly posing as an superintendent of police of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to book rooms at a government guest house in Diu in the Union Territory of Daman and Diu, police said.

"The accused, identified as Piyush Vyas, had sent an email to the collector of Diu on February 5 this year from his email id identifying himself as an SP of NIA," Joint Commissioner of police, crime branch, J K Bhatt told reporters.

In his email, Vyas had requested the collector to book three rooms in the Diu circuit house for two days on February 8 and 9, stating that he was planning to visit the city, a famous tourist attraction, along with his family members and relatives, Bhatt said.

"After the rooms were booked in his name, Vyas signed the register at the circuit house as NIA SP (while checking-in)," the officer said.

He said Vyas was exposed after police received a tip-off about his true identity.

He said the accused, a resident of Ahmedabad, works as a development officer at a public sector general insurance company.

Police registered an FIR against Vyas under section 170 (impersonating a public servant) of the IPC and section 66 (C)(D) (identity theft) of the Information Technology Act.
