Meghalaya government today announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 7.5 lakh and other benefits for the next of kin of each of the five policemen who were killed in an ambush by armed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) insurgents.

State Home Minister Roshan Warjri paid a tribute to the martyrs at the police headquarters here today even as Parliamentary Secretary (Home) Winnerson D Sangma and Director General of Police PJP Hanaman attended a separate condolence meeting at Williamnagar in the South Garo Hills district.

Warjri said the government had "adopted" strategies to check the counter insurgents and reviews were being held to address the issue.

GNLA militants had attacked a police vehicle yesterday at Banjakona near Kapasipara on NH-62, over 450km from here, killing all five personnel on board. The militants had fled with three AK-47 rifles and a carbine.
