Maharashtra water resources minister Girish Mahajan was today gheraoed by farmers and workers of NCP, Congress, Shiv Sena and MNS at the Collector's office here on the contentious issue of release of water from the Gangapur dam for Jayakwadi reservoir in Marathwada.

Local leaders of all the political parties are opposed to release of water from Gangapur dam, which supplies water to Nashik and surrounding area, to the drought-struck Marathwada.

Mahajan, a guardian minister for Nashik district, had to face angry protesters when he arrived at the Collector's office to attend a meeting of DPCC.

The protesters were led by district chief of NCP Ravindra Pagar, Shiv Sena MLA from Niphad Anil Kadam, city Congress president Sharad Aher and others.

Later the minister assured a delegation of protesters that he would speak to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on this issue.
