Two unidentified men set fire to the guest house in the Madurai Kamaraj University after locking up an assistant in one of the rooms, triggering tension in the area, police said today.

The assistant, Manickam, was later rescued by some passers by and Fire and Rescue service personnel put off the fire, they said.

The duo confronted Manickam and wanted to know who were staying in the guest house, but he told them it was unoccupied.

Then they locked him up in a room and set fire to the building which spread to kitchen and reception hall.

Hearing his cries for help, some passers by broke open the window of the room and rescued Manickam.

Police said they were investigating into the incident, including the motive of the duo.
