Hussain, who was associated with Observer Research Foundation, breathed his last in a London hotel on June 21 after a heart attack.
His body was flown here this morning and later buried at the Jamia burial ground.
Hussain, a former Ambassador to the US and honoured with Padma Bhushan in 1988, was 85. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Former Foreign Secretary M K Rasgotra, who was at the airport to receive the body, remembered Hussain as a "wonderful man with full of ideas".
On behalf of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, leaders Ahmed Patel and Motilal Vohra placed a wreath.

Born December 19, 1926 in Hyderabad, Hussain was an IAS and served in various capacities including Commerce Secretary and Heavy Industries Secretary.
He became a member of the Planning Commission in 1985 and five years later, India's Ambassador to the US.
Hussain is also the author of 'Sino-Indian Conflict and International Politics in the Indian Sub-Continent'.
