The award's jury was headed by the former Chief Justice of India, Justice P N Bhagwati. The award comprises a memento, citation and cheque of Rs 5 lakh.

He is a former president of the Neurological Society of India, the founding member of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorder Society and is with the regional collaborative research activities in the fields of multiple sclerosis and stroke.
The R D Birla Smarak Kosh, set up in 1979 under the support of the Bombay Hospital Trust, instituted Annual Awards for excellence in biomedical sciences and modern medicine.
The Kosh announced a donation of Rs 10 lakh to the Madhya Pradesh CM's Relief Fund, for which Chouhan expressed gratitude on behalf of his government.
