The National Commission for Women on Wednesday asked the Delhi Police to identify unsafe or vulnerable areas in the city and give better protection to women by increasing patrolling and installing 2,000 more CCTVs at such spots.

An NCW delegation met officials of the Delhi Police to discuss ways to strengthen coordination between the commission and the police to collectively ensure safety of women in the capital, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

"The Commission will organise gender sensitization programmes for police personnel, judicial officers, doctors and forensic experts with a view to address certain misconceptions about provisions of laws and also impress upon them the need for prompt action in such cases," she said.

It was also decided that the Commission and Delhi Police will collaborate and organise orientation programmes for women migrating to Delhi from the

Northeast region for education and work to facilitate such women to adjust in the changed environment, Sharma said.

Explaining further, an NCW official said Delhi Police will install 2,000 more CCTVs in addition to the 3,000 already in place across the capital.

In addition, Delhi Police has operationalised a system for utilising 1.5 lakh private CCTVs to gather evidence during investigation, if and when required, an NCW official said.

The complaints and investigation cell of the NCW highlighted the areas that require better coordination between them, she said.

The Delhi Police agreed on further refining the process of registering of Zero FIRs and facilitating the process of registration of FIR in such cases by calling investigation officer of police station concerned or escorting the complainant to the police station concerned when cases relate to Delhi, the official said.

In case the complaints pertain to other states, it was noted that Delhi Police is already registering Zero FIRs, she added

The Delhi Police indicated that they would conduct self-defence training programmes under the Sashakti initiative, the official said.
