To take on growing competition from electric car manufacturer Tesla, Japanese automobile major Nissan Motor today launched its new Leaf electric vehicle (EV).

It will be sold in Japan from October 2 and in Canada and the US from January next year.

"The new Leaf electric car can run about 400 km on a single charge by Japanese standards which is 40 per cent higher compared to the previous Leaf model," the company said in a statement.

The statement further said the new Leaf sets a new standard in the growing market for mainstream electric cars by offering customer greater range, advanced technologies and a dynamic new design.

Nissan Motor said it is a global full-line vehicle manufacturer that sells more than 60 models under the Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun brands.

In 2016 fiscal, the company sold 5.63 million vehicles globally, generating revenue of 11.72 trillion yen.

The Japanese firm had launched the Leaf electric car in 2010.
